How to Analyze Your Apple Health Data with AI
Your iPhone collects thousands of health data points every week. AI can turn that raw data into insights about your sleep, fitness, heart health, and more — if you can get it into the right format.
What can AI actually find in your health data?
The Apple Health app shows you daily summaries and simple charts. AI goes much deeper. When given access to your raw health data, AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can perform analysis that would take hours to do manually — across weeks, months, or years of data.
Here are the three types of insights AI is particularly good at finding:
Trends Over Time
Spot gradual changes in heart rate, sleep quality, or fitness that you wouldn't notice day-to-day
Correlations
Discover how one metric affects another — like how exercise impacts your sleep or how sleep affects your HRV
Anomalies
Flag unusual readings or sudden changes that stand out from your personal baseline
Three ways to analyze Apple Health data with AI
Not all approaches are equal. Here are three ways to get your health data into an AI tool, from the most manual to the most streamlined.
Approach 1: Manual export + upload to ChatGPT
TediousApple Health has a built-in "Export All Health Data" feature in Settings. This creates a massive XML file (typically 500MB to 1GB+) that you can try to upload to ChatGPT or another AI tool. The problem: the file is far too large, in the wrong format, and most AI tools reject it outright.
Even if you manage to find a script to convert the XML to something smaller, you're dealing with transferring the file to a computer, running Python, debugging edge cases, and then uploading the result. The whole process can take an hour or more.
Approach 2: AI Health Export's built-in AI chat
EasiestAI Health Export includes a built-in AI chat that reads your health data directly from Apple HealthKit. You don't export anything — just open the chat and ask a question. The AI already has access to your selected metrics and can generate insights, charts, and summaries in seconds.
This is the fastest path from raw data to insight. No file transfers, no format conversion, no uploading. Just ask a question and get an answer based on your actual health data.
- No export or upload needed — works instantly on your iPhone
- Ask questions in plain English about any of your health metrics
- Data stays on your device — processed locally before being sent to the AI
- Get follow-up suggestions for deeper analysis
Approach 3: Export CSV then use any AI tool
FlexibleAI Health Export can also create clean CSV files from your health data. You choose the metrics and time range, and the app generates compact, AI-ready files that you can upload to any tool you prefer — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, or even Python and R for custom analysis.
Each export includes an AI Data Guide — a text file with your health profile summary and ready-to-use prompts tailored to your data. This gives whatever AI tool you use the context it needs to provide meaningful analysis rather than generic advice.
- Use your preferred AI tool (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or any other)
- CSV files work with Excel, Google Sheets, and data science tools too
- Includes AI Data Guide with prompts tailored to your exported data
- Files typically 1-5MB — well within any AI tool's upload limit
Questions you can ask AI about your health data
Whether you use the built-in AI chat or export CSV files to your preferred tool, here are the kinds of questions that produce the most useful insights:
Heart & Cardiovascular
- "How has my resting heart rate trended over the past 3 months?"
- "What are my VO2 max trends showing? Am I getting fitter or less fit?"
- "How does my HRV compare on workout days vs. rest days?"
Sleep
- "Am I getting enough deep sleep? How do my sleep stages break down?"
- "Is there a correlation between my sleep duration and step count the next day?"
- "What time do I typically fall asleep, and is my schedule consistent?"
Activity & Fitness
- "Which days of the week am I most and least active?"
- "How has my running pace changed over the last 6 months?"
- "What's the relationship between my workout intensity and my sleep quality that night?"
Cross-Metric Analysis
- "Based on all my data, what patterns should I be paying attention to?"
- "Create a weekly health summary with my key metrics and trends."
- "What areas of my health are improving, and what areas need attention?"
87 health metrics available for AI analysis
AI Health Export can read 87 distinct metrics from Apple HealthKit. The more data you include, the richer the analysis. Here's what's available across every category:
Sleep
Total sleep duration, deep sleep, core sleep, REM sleep, sleep stages with timestamps, time in bed, and sleep schedule consistency
Heart & Vitals
Heart rate, resting heart rate, HRV, VO2 max, blood pressure (systolic and diastolic), blood oxygen, respiratory rate, ECG classifications, and heart rhythm notifications
Activity & Fitness
Steps, distance, flights climbed, active energy burned, basal energy, exercise minutes, stand hours, cycling distance, swimming strokes, running speed, running power, and workouts with duration and calories
Body Composition
Weight, BMI, body fat percentage, lean body mass, waist circumference, and height — tracked over time so AI can identify body composition trends
Nutrition
Calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, fiber, sugar, sodium, cholesterol, vitamins (A, B6, B12, C, D, E, K), calcium, iron, potassium, zinc, water intake, and caffeine
Other Metrics
Blood glucose, insulin delivery, environmental audio exposure, headphone audio levels, handwashing duration, UV exposure, menstrual cycle data, and respiratory metrics
Step-by-step: analyze your health data with AI Health Export
Whether you want to use the built-in AI chat or export CSVs to your own tool, here's how to get started:
Download AI Health Export and grant Health access
Install AI Health Export from the App Store. When you open it for the first time, the app will ask for permission to read your Apple Health data. This is a standard HealthKit permission request — you choose exactly which metrics to share. The app reads data locally on your iPhone and never sends it to any server.
Select your metrics and time range
Choose which health metrics you want to analyze. You can select individual categories like sleep, heart rate, and activity, or select all 87 metrics at once. Then pick a time range — 7 days is available for free, and Premium unlocks ranges up to your complete health history. For AI analysis, 30 to 90 days usually gives the best balance of detail and context.
Option A: Use the built-in AI chat
Tap the AI chat feature in the app. Your selected health data is automatically provided as context — no export or upload needed. Type any question in plain English: ask about trends, request comparisons between metrics, or ask for a summary of your overall health. The AI responds with analysis specific to your data, and suggests follow-up questions to go deeper.
Option B: Export CSV and use any AI tool
Tap export to generate CSV files. The app creates compact, structured files organized by metric — plus an AI Data Guide with your health profile and tailored prompts. Share the files to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, or any AI tool you prefer. The CSV format is also compatible with Excel, Google Sheets, Python, and R if you want to do your own analysis.
Why AI analysis beats looking at charts manually
The Apple Health app shows you one metric at a time in simple bar charts. That's useful for checking today's step count, but it can't answer bigger questions. Here's what AI can do that the Health app can't:
- Analyze long-term trends. AI can process 90 days, 6 months, or a full year of data and tell you whether your resting heart rate is gradually improving, your sleep quality is declining, or your fitness is plateauing.
- Find connections between metrics. Does your HRV drop after late nights? Do you sleep better on days you walk more than 8,000 steps? AI can cross-reference multiple data streams and surface correlations you'd never spot on your own.
- Compare time periods. Ask AI to compare this month to last month, weekdays to weekends, or pre- and post-training program. It can break down the differences metric by metric.
- Generate personalized summaries. Instead of scrolling through individual charts, ask AI to write a weekly or monthly health report covering your key metrics, progress, and areas to watch.
Your data stays private
AI Health Export processes everything locally on your iPhone. We have no servers, no accounts, and no way to see your data. When you use the built-in AI chat, your health data is formatted on-device before being sent to the AI model — we never store or access it.
If you choose to export CSV files, those files exist only on your iPhone until you decide where to share them. Face ID protection ensures that only you can access the export feature. What you do with your data is entirely your choice.
